FAQ

How do weapon levels work in Neon Abyss 2?
Weapons absorb Soul Shards and gain levels through the run. The current CapyDB PC reference lists level 8 as the cap, with a reward room opening at each level-up.
How many Soul Shards are needed to reach weapon level 8?
CapyDB's current table lists 1,430 Soul Shards from level 1 through level 8. Treat that number as PC-build data and recheck it after a patch.
What are Affixes?
Affixes are weapon properties that can change damage, speed, resources, or mechanics. The official Reforge announcement describes static and dynamic Affixes with Common, Rare, Epic, and Legendary rarities.
What does Tempering do?
Tempering adds a specific Affix as an alternative to the two direct upgrade choices in a weapon upgrade room. It is useful when a known build requirement matters more than a random option.
Does a weapon level directly multiply damage?
The current reference attributes level scaling to Affixes that scale per level rather than describing the level number itself as a direct damage multiplier. Check the Affixes on the copy you are using.

How weapon upgrades work

Weapon upgrades are a choice between immediate power and a build direction. Collect Soul Shards during a run and the weapon levels up; the current PC reference lists level 8 as the cap. Each level-up opens a reward room. The room offers two choices or a Forge option, so the best choice depends on the Affixes and resources already on that weapon.

CapyDB’s weapon-level table lists 1,430 Soul Shards from level 1 to level 8. That is a checked value for the PC build 2026.10.8.72af32744d5, not a promise for every platform or future patch. Use it to understand the scale of a full upgrade path, then recheck the live game if a patch changes the economy.

Read both upgrade pools

The current reference describes one reward from the weapon’s genre pool and another from its own upgrade pool. A choice can also be broken down into Stat Gems. This creates a practical rule: compare an option with the weapon’s actual attack loop before taking the larger-looking number. A charge weapon, a companion weapon, and a resource-spending weapon can value the same Affix very differently.

The page also describes a new Affix roll at level-up. When the weapon already has Affixes, there is a stated 50% chance that an existing Affix’s rarity is upgraded instead. The listed ceiling is seven Affixes on one weapon. These are database rules, so keep the source date visible when using them for a build planner.

The four Affix classes in the reference are per level, flat, per resource, and on hit. Per-resource examples include keys, coins, eggs, Hatchmon, wisps, bombs, extra Crystal containers, and extra jumps. A resource Affix is therefore a commitment: it is strongest when the run naturally supplies that resource and weaker when another item, Faith, or weapon is competing for it.

What Tempering changes

The official Weapon Reforge announcement describes static and dynamic Affixes, four Affix rarities, and Tempering. Tempering adds one specific Affix as an alternative to the two direct upgrade choices. It is the controlled option in an otherwise variable upgrade room, so reserve it for a requirement you can explain: a missing resource hook, a needed speed property, or a mechanic that completes the weapon’s loop.

Do not treat a Legendary label as an automatic verdict. Rarity does not tell you whether the property matches the room layout, your health plan, or your current supply. A Rare Affix that keeps a weapon reliable can be more useful than a mismatched high-rarity option. The weapon database shows the documented mechanic before you commit, while the contextual tier list records editorial recommendations and their limits.

A repeatable upgrade decision

Use this short check when a level-up room appears:

  1. Read the current weapon Affixes and note which resources they already consume.
  2. Decide whether the run needs safer room clear, boss pressure, mobility, or resource conversion.
  3. Compare the genre choice with the weapon-specific choice, then check whether either option competes with an item or Faith plan.
  4. Choose Tempering when one specific Affix is necessary and the random choices do not address that need.
  5. Break down an option into Stat Gems only when neither the new property nor its rarity upgrade fits the run.

The item synergy guide helps identify those resource conflicts. For a first run, the beginner guide explains why keeping Soul Shards, health, and room rewards aligned matters more than chasing a perfect Affix roll.

Sources and scope

This guide does not publish damage tests or claim that one upgrade is universally strongest. Console behavior and later patches should be rechecked against the live build.
